API for SEO Metrics: GSC, SERPs, Backlinks & Costs
Published by Perfect SEO Tools · Published · Updated
Choose an SEO API by the question you need to answer. Search Console measures Google performance for properties you can access; SERP APIs capture results for a query, market and device; backlink APIs expose a provider's crawl index. These datasets are not interchangeable. Check coverage, freshness, pagination, usage rights and total request cost before selecting a provider.
Why Not Just Scrape Google or Use GSC?
Before diving into premium APIs, developers often ask about scraping Google directly or using the free Google Search Console (GSC) API.
Search Console is a first-party source for properties you can access. Its Search Analytics API returns top rows subject to internal limits, so pagination does not guarantee every query is disclosed. Search result snapshots and third-party traffic estimates answer different questions; label them separately from measured Google clicks and impressions.
Build a report that preserves missing data
- Save the property, dates, search type, dimensions, filters and aggregation with each request.
- Request finalized data and allow for the reporting delay. Compare equal-length settled periods.
- Follow the provider's pagination mechanism. If a row cap or failure stops collection, label the result truncated and retain the next offset.
- Fetch property totals separately from page/query rows. Privacy filtering and aggregation differences mean row sums may not reproduce totals.
- Keep authentication failures, valid empty results, unavailable history and partial responses distinct. Missing data is not zero traffic.
Check the request row limit and pagination parameters before choosing an extraction schedule. A connector may impose a smaller page size than the underlying API. See the query reference and performance-data extraction guide for current limits and completeness caveats.
For example, a response containing 1,000 page/query rows with more rows available is a partial dataset, even if the HTTP request succeeded. Preserve that status in dashboards and exports; do not present the sum as the property's total traffic.
Top SEO APIs Compared
| API Provider | Best For | Pricing Model | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking | Agencies & Balanced Use | Subscription / Quota | API entitlement, included credits and endpoint costs |
| DataForSEO | High-Volume Custom Dev | Pay-as-you-go | Deposit, task priority, result depth and endpoint price |
| Ahrefs | Deep Backlink Data | Premium Subscription | Current plan eligibility, units and endpoint access |
| Semrush | Domain Analytics | Subscription | Product-specific API entitlement and extra units |
1. SE Ranking API
Who is it for? Marketing teams and agencies needing reliable data.
What does it solve? Provides robust data across keyword rankings, competitor research, and site audits without astronomical enterprise costs.
Where is it used? Ideal for client dashboards and reporting via standard REST API or built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for AI assistants like Claude.
How is it priced? Check the current API offering, including included credits, renewal terms and the endpoints your workflow needs.
2. DataForSEO
Who is it for? High-volume custom developers and software builders.
What does it solve? Provides endpoint-specific SERP, keyword and backlink data for custom reporting applications. Check the requested market, device, result depth and freshness when comparing outputs.
Where is it used? Integrated directly into custom applications via API.
How is it priced? Use the endpoint pricing table. Cost depends on the endpoint, task priority and depth; a single headline price does not describe a complete reporting workflow.
3. Ahrefs
Who is it for? Teams building backlink and competitor research workflows.
What does it solve? Ahrefs operates AhrefsBot, which Ahrefs describes as the crawler supporting its link index. Index size and crawl activity do not establish coverage of a particular domain; check the endpoint and sample results you need.
Where is it used? For enterprise-grade link tracking and deep competitive analysis.
How is it priced? Verify your plan and endpoint allowances in the Ahrefs API documentation. Tool access in a user interface does not necessarily include equivalent API access.
4. Semrush
Who is it for? Enterprise teams focused on domain analytics and PPC integration.
What does it solve? Semrush provides domain, keyword and backlink analytics. Confirm which dataset and geographic database each API endpoint covers.
Where is it used? Ideal for integrating market insights with PPC and social media data.
How is it priced? Check the Semrush developer documentation for the relevant product, subscription and unit charges.
How to Choose
- For Rank Tracking: If you just need SERP positions, a raw provider like DataForSEO or a specialized SERP scraper (like ScrapingBee) is usually the most cost-effective.
- For Client Reporting: SE Ranking provides pre-processed, easy-to-understand metrics that are perfect for client dashboards.
- For Link Building: Test backlink coverage on a representative set of your own URLs. Index size alone does not establish which provider has the most useful links for your task.
